چکیده

Competition graphs have appeared in a variety of applications from food webs to communication networks to energy models. The competition graph, C (D), of a digraph D has the same vertex set as D and (x; y) is an edge in C (D) if and only if there is a vertex z such that (x; z) and (y; z) are arcs in D. It has been observed that most actual food webs have interval competition graphs. Subsequent research investigating this phenomenon led to the problem of characterizing acyclic digraphs which have interval competition graphs since food web models are generally acyclic. This evolved into the problem of characterizing digraphs with interval or chordal competition graphs. The problem is diicult because forbidden subgraph characterizations generally don't work. Here we use an elimination ordering approach which leads to useful characterizations which can be generalized to determine which graphs have interval or chordal squares or two-step graphs.

Vertex Ordering Characterizations of Graphs of Bounded Asteroidal Number

Asteroidal Triple-free (AT-free) graphs have received considerable attention due to their inclusion of various important graphs families, such as interval and cocomparability graphs. The asteroidal number of a graph is the size of a largest subset of vertices such that the removal of the closed neighbourhood of any vertex in the set leaves the remaining vertices of the set in the same connected...

Recognition and Characterization of Chronological Interval Digraphs

Interval graphs admit elegant ordering and structural characterizations as well as linear time recognition algorithms. On the other hand, the usual interval digraphs lack all three of these characteristics. In this paper we identify another natural digraph analogue of interval graphs that we call “chronological interval digraphs”. By contrast, the new class admits an ordering characterization, ...

Parallel Gaussian Elimination with Linear Work and Fill

This paper presents an algorithm for nding parallel elimination orderings for Gaussian elimination. Viewing a system of equations as a graph, the algorithm can be applied directly to interval graphs and chordal graphs. For general graphs, the algorithm can be used to parallelize the ordering produced by some other heuristic such as minimum degree. In this case, the algorithm is applied to the c...

A Characterization of Graphs with Interval Two-Step Graphs

Dedicated by the other authors to Professor John Maybee on the occasion of his 65th birthday. Abstract. One of the intriguing open problems on competition graphs is determining what digraphs have interval competition graphs. This problem originated in the work of Cohen 5, 6] on food webs. In this paper we consider this problem for the class of loopless symmetric digraphs. The competition graph ...
